Headache Relief

I recently got a phone call from someone experiencing a severe headache that was in its third day. He asked if I had any immediate remedies.

I certainly did, and I shared with him an acupressure point, Large Intestine 4 (LI4), also known as “The Tylenol Point.” It’s found in the webbing between the thumb and first finger, applying pressure closer to the bone towards the first finger side. It is especially useful for headaches and to reduce pain in the whole body. Find the spot, then press, wiggle, massage as shown in the video. What you do on one side of the body, you do on the other side.

When that person tried this, he immediately felt tenderness. That’s a tip-off that you're onto something.

The second acupressure point I suggested was Small Intestine 3 (SI3). It is known as the master point of the upper back and shoulder. With palms up on the pinky finger side, locate this spot right above the first knuckle, going toward the wrist. Put the thumb there. Find the spot, then press, wiggle, massage. Do the same on the other side of the body.

Additionally, you can turn palms up and knock the pinky finger sides together. It may have to be repeated later in the day. Other suggestions I made were:

  1. Take a bubble bath with scents such as chamomile or lavender for aromatherapy.

  2. Get a neck ring, heat it in the microwave, then place it around the neck to relax those muscles.

  3. Breathwork. Inhale through the nose for a count of four. Exhale, for a count of six. The longer exhale lets you release energy that’s no longer serving you.

  4. No short, shallow breathing. That kind of breathing tells your nervous system it's in stress mode.

I received a call the following day from the person. They were close to 100% better. The Tylenol point was very helpful, but the breath work was perhaps the most helpful.

It's wise to have these kinds of tools in your toolbox before you get in crisis mode.
